A practical security baseline for growing businesses

Security advice often swings between “install this tool” and “hire a team of ten”. Growing businesses need something in between: a short list of controls that are cheap, proven and actually maintained.

Protect sign-ins first

Most incidents begin with a stolen or guessed password. Require multi-factor authentication for email, remote access and anything that holds customer data. Use a password manager so people stop reusing the same few passwords.

Patch and back up on a schedule

Unpatched software is the second most common way in. Automate updates where you can and keep a monthly review for what you cannot. Keep backups in a separate place from the systems they protect, and test a restore at least twice a year. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan.

Know who has access to what

When people change roles or leave, access should change the same week. A quarterly review of accounts and permissions is one of the highest-value hours your team can spend.

Quick checklist

  • Multi-factor authentication everywhere that matters
  • Automated patching with a monthly exceptions review
  • Offsite, tested backups
  • Quarterly access reviews
  • A one-page incident plan with phone numbers on it
  • Short, regular staff awareness sessions
None of this is glamorous. All of it is measurable, and together it closes the doors attackers walk through most often.
